Rooftop PV System
Rooftop PV system has its solar panels mounted on the rooftop of a residential or commercial or industrial roof. It has small capacity compared to ground mounted solar PV power stations. A utility interactive roof top PV system is the most simplest and cost effective installation. It is not competent to back up power during outages. DC power generated by PV modules or array or string mounted on roof is converted to AC power by inverter, which feeds the site load. During power generation through PV solar, power drawn from utility gets reduced. In the case of excessive power generation, energy fed backs to utility. Depending on policy, power that is pushed back into the grid is purchased by utility or adjusted in billing cycle.
Ground Mounted PV System
Grid connected PV system is a megawatt scale solar park designed to add power generation in to electricity grid. It is ground mounted PV system furnished with fixed tilt or single axis tracker or dual axis tracker. DC power generated by PV array is transmitted to large power inverter. AC power output of inverter is made avail to utility through transformer. To maximize grid connected PV system efficiency, power plants are incorporated with maximum power point trackers (MPPT) either within the inverters or as separate units. These device keeps each solar array string close to its peak power point. The performance of a solar park is a function of the climatic conditions, the equipment used and the system configuration.
Water Pumping PV System
Water pumping PV system is small scale power generation designed for agricultural, house hold or industrial applications. It is capable of running all types of submersible, centrifugal or deep wall pumping system. A typical water pumping PV system is known by the sum total of solar array size that is required to run the attached pump. Each solar array has a number of solar modules connected in parallel or series. The electrical energy from the entire array is controlled by inbuilt controller or through variable frequency driver. Water pumping PV system may be coupled with drip irrigation systems to provide optimized water to fields directly.
Lighting PV System
Lighting PV System is an LED lamp based luminaries composed of solar panels, battery, DC charge controller. Non-contact control of DC charge controller automatically turns on the light at dark and switches off at daytime. In some cases, it is combined with time controllers to set time for its automatic switch on and off.
Micro-grid Connected PV System
Micro grid connected PV system has its own power plant subjected to village. The capacity of micro grid connected PV system depends upon needs of individuals in the village. DC power generated by PV array is transmitted to power conditioning unit (PCU), which is, in simple terms large power inverter. In case of excess power generation PCU leads it to the battery bank. Battery bank stores the power and this power can be used during night. Micro grid and battery bank can be observed through computer server.
Stand Alone PV System
Stand-alone PV system is designed to acquire power for certain days when sun is not available. It is the system which integrates large number of battery storage. Power handling capacity of this system must be enough capable to feed all energy needs at the site and recharge the batteries at the same time. Stand-alone solution is best for spacecraft, remote buildings, pumps, boats, road signs, radio towers etc. DC power generated by PV array is transmitted to inverter. A charge controller may be incorporated in the system to avoid battery damage by excessive charging or discharging.
